Sheet pile retaining walls were installed to form basis to the underpass at Pännäinen railway station near Pietarsaari in Finland. 10 meter long sheet piles were partly for temporary excavation support but for some sections the sheets formed the permanent structure of the under rail passageway that allows passengers access to platforms. Piling contractor Niskasen Maansiirto Oy was driving the sheets with Movax SP-50E Side-Grip vibro mounted to Hitachi crawler excavator.
This railway station renewal is part of the bigger development scheme at Finnish railways. Project with estimated value of 860M€ includes renovation of stations and over 300 km of railway line between Seinäjoki and Oulu in central and north Finland. The line is one of the most densely trafficked in Finland and important freight line.
