Repairing the damages of the earthquake

New Zealand

Christchurch

A strong earthquake rattled the Canterbury region around city of Christchurch in the south island of New Zealand on September 3rd. The magnitude of the earthquake was 7.1. The epicentre of the earthquake was just 45 kilometres from the centre of Christchurch.

In suburb of Bromley, there is a water treatment plant. Before letting the water to the Pegasus bay it goes through the oxidation ponds. A concrete tube connects two oxidation ponds separated by road. The earthquake broke concrete tubes which caused major problems to the water treatment and closing of the road. In order to take the old broken tubes away and to install the new tubes, two cofferdams were required both sides of the road to isolate the water during the work.

Local contractor G&T Constructions used Movax SPH-80 sheet piler to install sheet piles for the cofferdams. The same contractor also changed the concrete tubes. The diameters of the installed tubes were 1350 mm and 1800 mm.

The earthquake made a lot of other damages too. For example it weakened a dike between two oxidation ponds. Because of this, it was decided to strengthen the dike by installing sheet pile wall. G&T Construction, in cooperation with March Construction and Daniel Smith Industries, installed 1000 sheet piles to a 500 metres long distance.
