Passenger pier by the lake Vanajavesi few steps away from the town centre of Hämeenlinna was rebuilt during the spring and early summer 2009. As the pier is located right by the lake a temporary dam for casting the base for the new construction was necessary. The dam was accomplished with a steel sheet pile wall which was hit to the water bottom. The work area surrounded by the sheet pile wall was then kept dry with pumps. New pier reaches 2 meters beyond the old construction and at the same time the northern part of it got extended. The whole extension was built on steel tube construction which was driven to the hard bottom of the lake. Piling, dismantling of the sheet pile wall as well as lifting the sheet piles on and off the carriage was done with Movax SP-60F – model machines.
The new passenger pier replaces the old one which was built already in 1928. Along with 2-3 passenger ships the pier is used by charter bus traffic and increasing amount of tourism boating. For example in 2007 13 000 passenger got aboard in Hämeenlinna and the amount of travellers is predicted to increase over 10 percent every year. In a later construction phase also the pavilion by the pier will be rebuilt to meet the needs of the growing passenger traffic.
