More load bearing capacity with vibro stone columns

Brazil

Recife

Movax was used for the first time to improve the load bearing capacity of a soil by constructing vibro stone columns into the ground. Work was conducted by Recon Estacas in the city of Recife in Brazil. Movax model used to do the job was SP55W (a modification of SP60W).

Subject of building is a multistorey apartment building with a total ground area of 24 x 24 meters. Foundation of the building will consist of several big concrete slabs casted on the ground which is reinforced with the stone columns.

Work started by driving a 310 mm diameter tube into the ground on the wished depth, which in this case was 5-9 meters. On the bottom end of the tube was a hinged plug which stayed closed when hitting the tube. Once the tube was in the ground it was filled with aggregate. After this the tube was removed. When removing the tube the plug opened and aggregate poured to the ground to form a 5-9 meters deep column. The same tube was then used over again to make as many columns as necessary to cover the whole building ground.

With this method the profit comes not only from the improved bearing capacity brought by the stone columns – also the original soil of the working area compacts and creates an increase in bearing capacity.
