Micro tunnelling a railway underpass for storm water drains

India

Bhayander

Ghai Construction Limited from Pune, India, is constructing two storm water drains under railway tracks in Bhayander near the city of Mumbai. This area is subject to a heavy monsoon rains and over 80% of the annual rainfall is supplied during only a four months period from June to September.

The purpose is to connect the existing drains to the pipes on the other side of the tracks. Drains are connected with pipes which are 1800 mm of internal diameter and made of concrete. These pipes are to be drawn from beneath the tracks. Micro tunnel boring machine is used to drill under the all six tracks. Cofferdams on the both sides are made of 8 meters long and 325 mm in diameter interlocking tubular piles. Cofferdam at the starting end of the work serves also as a support for the pipe jacking equipment. Tubular piles where driven with Movax SP40W tube driver installed on CAT 320D.
