Efficient port maintenance

Germany

Norddeick

The Movax Side-Grip was selected as new equipment for installing and replacing hard wood signal posts and fenders at North Sea ports in Germany.

Hardwood timber piles used for the fenders and the signal posts are 400 mm square and 16 metres long. These are driven with the Movax SP-70F4W Side-Grip vibratory pile driver with purpose made clamps for the square timber pile. A carrier excavator Liebherr 946 is operating from the deck of the port maintenance vessel. This provides very easy access to the open water areas for the signal posts as well as around the dock for the fenders. A mobility of the machinery allows this kind of maintenance tasks to be completed without disturbing normal operations of the port.

The method has proved to be effective and safe. The Movax Side-Grip clamps the piles transported on the deck and moves it to vertical position overboard without use of crane or assisting man power. The manoeuvrability of the excavator boom and arm makes it quick and easy to compensate a possible tilting of the vessel to maintain the verticality of the pile. Time is of the essence in coastal environment where the low tide limits access to some locations. These port maintenance projects are carried out by a Norddeick based team of Ports authority Niederlassung Norden. They have also acquired the Movax IH-25 hydraulic drop hammer to complement their on board piling capacities. The IH-25 ensures the fenders can be driven to even hardest spots and it also extends their capabilities to load bearing piles.
