Flood Relief Scheme in Skibbereen, Ireland

Oct 16, 2018

The protection of the town of Skibbereen from inundation due to tidal and fluvial flooding consisted of the installation of over 3,300T of sheet piles varying in length from 7m to 28.5m. The works were undertaken in both the rural hinterlands and the urban town centre of Skibbereen with piling carried out within 3m of residential and business properties.

As part of the scheme contractor Jons Civil Engineering considered the use of the Movax SG-75V vibratory side grip piler, adapted to fit Volvo 380 excavator, due to its versatility in confined spaces and the close vicinity of heavy traffic and properties. It provided the safest solution for installing sheet piles varying from 7m to 13m long adjacent to busy roads and residential buildings. Sheet piles were driven using both the side grip and top grip of the Movax.
